For years I've derided Don Letts as a man whose career owes more than a pinch to the iconic photo of him walking down Portobello Road against a backdrop of a full on Notting Hill Carnival riot as worked onto the cover of Black Market Clash.
Despite, or perhaps because of my sneers I couldn't pass up the opportunity to check the mam/myth at Norwich Arts Centre last night. The Tam is huge btw.
Walking up Prince of Wales Road I spotted and snaffled a £20 note which was soon recirculated into the night time economy on St Benedict's Street in the heart of the boujie Norwich Lanes with Global Head on a fine Thug Life (a Wetty for Global Head ) and three Pravhas. Apparently it's OK to serve a beer with more head than beer unless you for a full (ish) pint.
Different crowd to PIL, more arty and a (slightly) younger average age. Dub is the only music I'd consider tapping a toe to, the easy skank adopted by us punks back in Don's nascent days to a full on winding up of the waist to. I didn't of course . having found my favourite Arts Centre railing to lean on.
Letts melted on as the fill DJ packed away his platters and I didn't hear him utter a word, letting his sounds do the talking looking for all the world like a huge praying mantis holding the pulsating mob in his sway.
I did leave a little early. not wanting to miss the Vomit Comet and on a warm summer evening Norwich is indeed a Fine City
Until you get you get to the meat market that is after dark Prince of Wales Road and Riverside. No pictures please
Being, like you, an old fart I've never "got" the concept of going to see a DJ live. Even if it is The Don.
ReplyDeleteI mean in the same way you would a band. As I say to my boy " He just plays records , come round mine and I'll play some for you. "
For some reason this irritates him 😆
