Some one has been busy in the garden. One of the doves I'd guess. Whatever it was (probably) Ms. Sparrowhawk has had it for her breakfast. The female sparrowhawk is noticeably larger than the male.
Great birds! Always feel a little sad when they kill, which is bizarre and silly of me as I'm a huge raptor follower. I over-sentimentalise some parts of our country life and am quite realistic about others... If I had a garden, I'd get one of those nifty nature cameras you can get to record the goings on. One day...
I have an update. It was fenestration. Said dove was chased onto our patio window (comedy bird shaped imprint sadly gone) and laid gently to rest by a family menber, under the hawk eyed (sorry!)cold and fierce stare of the chasing sparrowhawk who bode her/his time before beginning to mantle and pluck. No one thought to tell me or guage size thus sex. Townies.
Msssed a further lyric trick there..the female of the species is more deadly than the male.
ReplyDeleteI'm here all week.
That's exactly what I thought. A bit of true wildness in suburbia.
DeleteThey are very active in the orchards with all the fieldfares providing a birds bird table. John
